Candidate's Statement. In 125 words or less, please write why you are interested in this position, what you will bring to the role and what contributions you can make to GLA in this position:

I have been active in state and regional professional associations throughout my career, including leadership roles in Alabama, Florida, and Virginia. That said , I find myself beginning my seventh year in Georgia with only an active membership in GLA but no record of service. My service on the Innovative Users Group Steering Committee has ended, and I would like to bring my energy, experience, and enthusiasm to the Georgia Library Association.

I believe in the idea that membership in a group such as GLA involves active involvement by its members. I am willing to contribute my time, interest, and enthusiasm to contribute to the success of GLA and would welcome an opportunity to network with fellow GLA members across the state.

I enjoy performing quite a variety of library operations like many librarians at small libraries are fortunate to do. I catalog and oversee processing of the library materials for four campuses; I provide daily reference services to individuals on the Elbert County Campus, and since 2007, I coordinate library services for the three branch libraries, including collection development and processing of interlibrary loans, as well as teaching library instruction classes. But I have to admit, story times with the Athens Technical College Day Care toddlers and preschoolers are a highlight of my collage of responsibilities.

Our Georgia Library Association has been a strong force motivating librarians and library staff from all types of libraries from all over the state to come together to learn, share, collaborate, and enjoy a camaraderie that has been very special to me as a librarian in this state since 1995. I wish to share my enthusiasm for and commitment to GLA by encouraging growth of our membership and thus, increasing the positive impact of the Association on Georgia libraries. I have enjoyed and learned so much from serving as the GLA Treasurer, 2nd Vice President, chair of several committees, and serving under experienced leaders in our organization. As Vice President/President Elect of GLA I will strive to lead this association with compassion and purpose.

As the Circulation Librarian, I establish annual and long-range departmental goals and objectives. I also explore, evaluate, plan, and implement new services and technologies.

After earning my degree in Library and Information Science from the University of North Texas in 2001, I began my professional career at the University Of Arkansas at Monticello as Special Collections, Interlibrary Loan, and Reference Librarian. I have almost two decades of public, academic and special library experience.

I currently serve on Swilley Library's Technology/Web Committee, as well as chair the Library's Innovative Interfaces Coordinating Committee. I served as a member on the 2007 COMO Conference Planning Committee and have presented at the national Innovative Users Group Annual Conference.

GLA has always played a crucial role in identifying and meeting the professional needs of Georgia's librarians and paraprofessionals. One aspect of that role is library advocacy among resource allocators. Never has such advocacy and the need for a strong, responsive GLA, been as important is it is right now. A larger and more diverse membership is essential to ensuring a stronger, more effective GLA. What I will bring to the position of Second Vice President are 29 years of library experience in a wide range of positions from paraprofessional to library directorships at two academic and one special library. More importantly, I will bring a commitment to expanding and diversifying GLA's membership.

I wish to become more actively involved in GLA, and serving on the Executive Board would help me reach this goal. My current position at Georgia State University Library requires me to prepare and present reports, and I have served as secretary for a library standing committee. I believe these experiences have helped prepare me to serve as GLA Secretary. My organizational skills and dedication to assigned tasks mean that I will compile and disseminate meeting minutes to GLA members in a timely fashion. Finally, as a relatively new librarian, I will bring a positive, innovative attitude to the Executive Board.

Serving as GLA's Chapter Councilor has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career. Over the years I've developed friendships with ALA Executive Director Keith Fiels, Office for Intellectual Freedom Director Judith Krug, Chapter Relations Director Michael Dowling, and Director of Membership Development John Chrastka. They have helped me bring speakers to Georgia like ALA Presidents Leslie Berger and Jim Rettig. John and Michael helped me make Georgia one of the first states to offer joint memberships in ALA and GLA for library school students. Those relationships will allow me to continue bringing ALA speakers to Georgia and to help GLA take full advantage of its position as a chapter of ALA.

My career as a library director has centered on building community partnerships and maintaining effective relationships with community agencies. Most organizations offer leadership opportunities which I found with the Kiwanis Club of Newnan. As the first female president, I had an opportunity to study, understand, and communicate all sides of every issue. With my past skills and experience in communication, I can offer broad understanding of issues between GLA and ALA. As councilor, communication with GLA members will be vital as will complete understanding of the issues at hand. This position offers a unique opportunity to serve two of the most important organizations in the profession. I am honored to be considered for this task and would work hard to promote consensus, understanding and communication.
