The Georgia Archives Conservation Department together with the Big River Bindery are excited to present four 3-day workshops in 2020 on the conservation and preservation of books and paper artifacts:

• Introduction to Paper Conservation – August 7 – 9 ($350)
• Book Conservation for Circulating and Reference Collections – August 21 – 23 ($350)
These workshops are for anyone who works in cultural heritage institutions, libraries, museums, galleries, or just has an interest in learning on how to best look after their own objects. The workshops are set at a foundational level and no prior experience or training is required. Join us for as few as one or as many as all four workshops to gain a greater understanding of book and paper conservation / preservation and how to best look after your treasures!

PRESERVATION MANAGEMENT FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE INSTITUTIONS
This workshop is for those who work in cultural heritage institutions of any size from libraries and archives to museums and galleries. The workshop will cover the causes of material degradation, environmental monitoring and control, integrated pest management and housekeeping, preservation policies, storage furniture and enclosures, risk assessment, emergency planning and procedures, and disaster recovery. The workshop will be conducted in a classroom and will include a tour of the Georgia Archives to show how these concepts are put into everyday practice. Participants are also welcome to share their experience with preservation at their own institutions and discuss ways to problem solve for specific concerns.

INTRODUCTION TO PAPER CONSERVATION
This hands-on workshop will teach participants the fundamentals of paper conservation that can be used to preserve and repair their paper-based objects. The course will cover what paper is and how it degrades, ethics and decision-making for conservation treatments, selecting appropriate conservation materials, humidification and flattening, dry surface cleaning, basic tape removal, preparing conservation appropriate adhesives and remoistenable mending tissue, and tear repairs. A toolkit of the basic tools necessary to complete all the treatments will be included in the registration fee to allow participants to continue to execute the treatments taught after the workshop.

BOOK CONSERVATION FOR CIRCULATING AND REFERENCE COLLECTIONS
This class is a hands-on workshop for those responsible for the care, maintenance, and repair of circulating book collections. Topics covered in this course will include the criteria used in decision making concerning the triage and treatment of damaged books, an overview of the necessary equipment and materials used in the treatment of damaged books, and an introduction to the conservation ethics applicable to circulating collections. Repair treatments covered in this course will include hinge tightening, flat paper mending, tip-ins, spine replacement, re-casing, and new casing. Participants are encouraged to bring books for analysis, treatment, and discussion.
