Description: As distance learning populations at many academic institutions continue to grow, instruction librarians struggle to provide equitable learning opportunities to them. With a 15,000+ student body consisting primarily of adult distance learners, often equipped with prior learning credits and/or enrolled in unstructured programs of study, Empire State College has been wrestling with this thorny issue for more than a decade. Over the years we’ve developed and honed a suite of information literacy services, resources, collaborations, and assessment tools that target students at various places and times in their academic career, using a variety of modes of delivery. This discussion will highlight these services and programs, including a self-assessment during orientation; live, hands-on, online workshops; self-paced micro-courses, and the everyday work of collaborating with faculty and instructional designers to embed support materials into courses.
This session is cohosted by the Distance Learning Interest Group of the Georgia Library Association.
About the Presenter:
Dana Longley is Assistant Director for Library Instruction and Information Literacy at State University of New York (SUNY), Empire State College. As part of a small, dedicated team of librarians for the last 16 years, she manages and delivers learning opportunities and helps provide a variety of other library services for the college’s distance learners.
Can’t make it to the live show? That’s okay. The session will be recorded and available on the Carterette Series Webinars site for later viewing.
